Product Categories with Inelastic Demand
Within the unstable environment, it is very important to know which products show inelastic demand: The greatest price competition concerns alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, with an index of 2.23. Perishable foods follow with 2.07, among all retail product categories. Cigarettes and tobacco products follow (1.75), while soft drinks are in fourth place (1.71), before cookies, snacks and confectionery (1.63). Non-alcoholic beverages and soft drinks show the highest percentages in terms of price elasticity, 65% and 61% respectively, with regard to internal competition factors in their subcategory. The 35% and 39% concern price elasticity factors that come from the overall market.
